On January 1, 1995, Jim Dailey was sworn in as the first
popularly-elected Mayor of the City of Little Rock in over 38 years. Prior
to his mayoral term, Dailey had served as a member of the Little Rock
Board of Directors since January of 1989. The mayor is currently serving
in his thirteenth year.
In 1973, Mayor Dailey began his career in public life by serving on the
Little Rock Board of Directors. After one term, Dailey left the public
sector to concentrate on the family's office supply business. In 1980, he
was elected President of the National Office Products Association, the
first and only Arkansan to hold this position.
As Mayor of Little Rock, Dailey worked closely with the Board of
Directors in overseeing the development and implementation of two
community-wide collaborative efforts: FUTURE-Little Rock and Vision Little
Rock. These efforts have led to the creation of a comprehensive vision and
related action plan for Little Rock's first ten years of the new
millennium.
In 1998, with support from Mayor Dailey, the Mayor's Youth Council was
formed as a result of America's Promise. The Youth Council is a
community-based youth organization that promotes youth volunteerism and
provides community service projects each month. The Council represents 18
public and private schools in Little Rock with over 100 members in grades
9-12.
Dailey is the past President of the Arkansas Municipal League. He also
serves on the Board of Directors for the Little Rock Regional Chamber of
Commerce, Metroplan, LOPFI, Arkansas BioVentures and New Futures. Dailey
is the past Vice-Chair of the National League of Cities (NLC) Steering
Committee on Information, Technology, and Communications and sits on the
NLC Board of Directors and the Municipalities in Transition on Public
Finance. He has been appointed to serve as Chair for the Intergovernmental
Advisory Committee for the FCC.
The Mayor graduated from the University of Arkansas with a Bachelor of
Science degree in Business Administration. He was born July 31, 1942 in
Little Rock and has been married to Patti Murphy since 1965. They have two
daughters, two sons and six grandchildren…a set of quadruplets, plus two.
